Though unexplainable why, nature has always been an important part of my life. As I’ve been reflecting on the role of nature in my life, I think about not only me, but those who come before me: my mother, my grandmother, my great-grandmother and the ancestors who look down upon me now. The work of life, glory, and daisies focuses on the specific and personal relationships between me and nature, combining that work with Black ecology. Black ecology focuses on the relationship between anti-Blackness, the exploitation of nature and the ecological crisis, and the imperative of racial justice to environmental justice. Black ecology combats environmental destruction and climate change and its effect on Black and BIPOC communities. Through Black ecology and my art, I find healing through nature and growing life on Earth, and think about what it means to be a Black woman intertwined with nature.
